Montana’s 2026 Mule Deer Buck Rules in HDs 426, 447 and 471
Montana’s 2026 mule deer buck rules change during the general rifle season in Hunting Districts 426, 447 and 471. In HDs 426 and 471, a general deer license covers an antlered mule deer buck from October 24 through November 15. In HD 447, that same general-license window applies only outside the National Forest boundary. From November 16 through November 29, a district-specific deer permit is required for those buck opportunities. Inside HD 447’s National Forest boundary, a buck mule deer requires a permit throughout the rifle season.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) issued its district-specific reminder on October 6, 2026. Check the current FWP regulations and corrections for your exact license, permit and hunt area before leaving. This article is a planning aid, not the regulation booklet.
The date that changes the mule deer plan
Montana’s general deer and elk rifle season runs October 24 through November 29, 2026. The first three weeks, October 24–November 15, and the last two weeks, November 16–29, are different mule deer buck opportunities in these districts. Do not carry an opening-week general-license assumption into the second half of November.
The deer permits named below had an April 1 deadline for the regular 2026 special drawing. FWP may offer leftover permits through its surplus process, but availability for these exact permit numbers is not established here. Check MyFWP or ask FWP before counting on a late permit purchase. A deer permit must be used with a valid general deer license and does not authorize a second deer.
FWP lists the 2026 archery-only season as September 5–October 18. The dates below address the October 24–November 29 general rifle season.
HDs 426 and 471: general license first, permit later
In HD 426 (Winifred) and HD 471 (Geraldine), FWP’s 2026 district tables list an antlered buck mule deer on a general deer license from October 24 through November 15. The later November 16–29 buck opportunity is listed under Deer Permit 426-50 in HD 426 and Deer Permit 471-50 in HD 471. Hunters need to check the permit actually issued to them before planning a late-November buck hunt.
The 426-50 district row also says its holder may not hunt an antlered buck mule deer in another hunting district. Do not assume a special permit preserves an unrestricted buck option elsewhere; read the conditions printed for your own permit. The 471-50 row does not print the same cross-district sentence, so check the current FWP booklet and the permit rather than transferring 426-50 wording to it.
This change is specific to the mule deer buck opportunity. The same FWP tables list either-sex white-tailed deer on a general deer license through November 29 in both districts. Species identification matters: a whitetail entry that continues through the full season does not extend the general-license mule deer buck dates.
HD 447: mark the National Forest boundary
HD 447 (Belt–Square Butte) adds a location test to the date test. Outside the National Forest boundary, FWP lists an antlered buck mule deer on a general deer license through November 15. For November 16–29, the listed outside-boundary buck opportunity is Deer Permit 447-50, used with a valid general deer license.
Inside the National Forest boundary, the general deer license does not provide HD 447’s mule deer buck opportunity. FWP lists Deer Permit 447-51 for that inside-boundary buck hunt during October 24–November 29; the permit must be used with a valid general deer license. A hunter crossing the boundary during a stalk should know which side the animal and hunter are on before making a decision.
The 447-50 and 447-51 permit rows each say holders may not hunt an antlered buck mule deer in another hunting district. These are not extra-deer permits, and the inside-forest and outside-forest permits are not interchangeable.
“Outside the National Forest boundary” is a rule description, not permission to enter private land. FWP says hunters need the landowner’s, lessee’s or agent’s permission to hunt private property even when it is not posted. Confirm ownership and your legal route as well as the hunting-district line.
HD 447 antlerless elk: a separate license check
FWP also warns that an antlerless elk cannot be taken on a general elk license on National Forest land in HD 447. Region 4 Elk B License 004-00 is also listed as invalid on National Forest land. FWP identifies HD 447’s Elk B License 447-00 as the relevant antlerless-elk license for Forest Service land during the archery-only and general seasons; its 2026 table lists the general-season opportunity from October 24 through November 29.
Do not extend that statement to every season on the calendar. The separate early and late shoulder-season rows for Elk B License 447-00 say they are not valid on National Forest lands. Check the season row and land restriction that match the day you will hunt.
A five-minute check before you leave
- Read your own documents. Match the species, district, license or permit number, season and any land restriction in FWP’s current booklet.
- Mark November 16. If a mule deer buck is your objective in HD 426, 471 or outside HD 447’s National Forest boundary, verify that you hold the appropriate late-season permit and a valid general deer license before planning a hunt after November 15. Do not assume a surplus permit will be available.
- Trace the HD 447 boundary. Use the FWP Hunt Planner as a mapping aid, then check the official regulation booklet and land manager for boundaries and restrictions. FWP says the map is a guide, not a substitute for the regulations.
- Confirm access. A legal license opportunity does not grant private-land permission. Know the ownership of your entry, hunt and retrieval route.
- Resolve uncertainty with FWP. The October 6 notice gives Region 4’s office number as 406-454-5840. Call before the hunt if your permit wording, district or National Forest line is unclear.
For the broader 2026 conditions picture, see Caribou Gear’s Montana preparation article. Use current agency information for any conditions or access details that may have changed since that April post.
Once the license and route are settled, match the meat-care kit to the animal and breakdown method. A deer-sized bag system belongs in that plan if you will carry mule deer quarters and loose meat out in separate loads.
Questions hunters may still have
Can I buy a 426-50, 447-50, 447-51 or 471-50 deer permit in October?
The regular 2026 deer-permit drawing closed April 1. FWP can offer leftover permits through its surplus process, including possible over-the-counter sales after the surplus list. This article has not verified October availability for any of these four permit numbers. Check MyFWP or ask FWP, and do not plan a hunt around a permit you do not hold.
Does one of these deer permits let me take a second deer?
No. FWP says a deer permit is not a second license; it changes where or when a valid general deer license may be used for the specified opportunity. It must be paired with that license.
Does Elk B License 447-00 cover National Forest land in HD 447’s shoulder seasons?
No. FWP’s 2026 table lists separate early and late shoulder-season rows for 447-00 that say “Not valid on National Forest lands.” Check the row for the date you plan to hunt.
If I am outside HD 447’s National Forest boundary, can I hunt any parcel there?
No. The hunting opportunity and land access are separate. FWP says hunters need permission from the landowner, lessee or agent to hunt private property whether or not it is posted. Verify ownership and access before entering.
The field rule
In HDs 426 and 471, check the date before treating a general deer license as a mule deer buck opportunity. In HD 447, check the date and the National Forest boundary. Read the exact 2026 FWP license and permit rows before you hunt; if the line or permit is uncertain, ask FWP Region 4 before entering the field.
